Grassroots sport is
good for our ENVIRONMENT.

Grassroots pitches across the UK can create a connection between people and the natural world. But they’re in danger.

Through our Matched Funding programme, we’re working with grassroots sports clubs to create greener, more resilient spaces that benefit players, communities and nature alike.

Every project is designed to make a lasting difference in the club's community.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Every year, 100,000 games are cancelled every year in football alone due to poor pitch conditions, and by 2050, 1 in 4 pitches could be underwater.

Every cancelled game is a missed opportunity for connection, exercise, routine and the countless mental health benefits that grassroots sport provides.

So, we’re doing something about it.

HOW WE’RE HELPING

We helped 100-year-old club Old Northamptonians raise £20,000 to make their pitches playable again and reunite multiple sporting communities.

Working alongside volunteers, The Wildlife Trust, and the wider club community, we delivered biodiversity improvements across the site, creating new habitats and supporting local wildlife.

SUSTAINABILITY & grassroots sport

Working alongside delivery partners such at The Wildlife Trust and The Woodland Trust,
our approach is about finding opportunities to implement nature-based solutions such as:

🌳 Trees and hedgerows
Helping absorb rainfall, slow surface water and provide shelter and food for wildlife.

🐝 Pollinator habitats
Creating space for bees, butterflies and other insects that are essential to healthy ecosystems.

🦔 Habitat boxes and homes
Giving birds, bats, insects and other wildlife places to nest, shelter and thrive.

🌿 More diverse planting
Introducing vegetation that can improve biodiversity while helping spaces become more resilient to extreme weather.

💧 Natural water management
Using the landscape to slow, store and absorb rainfall rather than relying solely on hard infrastructure.

LET’S DO SOME COOL STUFF TOGETHER

We're looking to work with organisations that share our ambition to bring sport, nature and climate resilience together.

We're particularly interested in working with environmental organisations, conservation charities, biodiversity experts, climate organisations, researchers, land managers and businesses looking to support practical environmental action in their communities.

Future partnerships could include:

  • Biodiversity and habitat projects

  • Tree and hedgerow planting

  • Pollinator and wildlife initiatives

  • Community environmental education

  • Nature-based flood resilience

  • Research and impact measurement

  • Campaigns connecting people with nature through sport

If your organisation wants to help make grassroots sport better for people and better for nature, we'd love to hear from you.
