CASE STUDY: DIDSBURY TOC H

HOW WE’RE HELPING

This Manchester-based rugby club have over 100 years of community sports history. But flooding has led to waterlogged pitches, and cancelled games and training.

SAVE OUR GRASSROOTS matched every £1 donated to help them get them to their £9,252 target - funding critical improvements to pitch quality and resilience via proven, natural solutions.

“Now we have a chance to build back stronger”

“The flooding was devastating, but the response from the local community was incredible. Now we have a chance to build back stronger and protect a place that brings people together through sport, volunteering and friendship.

ARTHUR CRABTREE
Club Secretary

On New Year's Day 2025, the River Mersey burst its banks and flooded Didsbury Sports Ground.

Club facilities and pitches were submerged. Community spaces that bring people together week after week were left devastated.

Thanks to an incredible effort from members, volunteers, and supporters, the club has recovered from the immediate damage. But with extreme weather becoming more common, recovery alone is no longer enough.

The funds raised will go directly towards:

  • Pitch restoration - Vertidrain treatment across both rugby pitches, application of 60 tons of sports-grade sand, and full reseeding to restore playing surfaces to a safe, playable standard.

  • Nature improvements - Planting and habitat boxes to help "nature max" the site, working with the environment to begin to strengthen the ground's natural flood resilience.
